I spotted this 'NOT a flame maple top cherry burst' on the ebay and got it fairly cheap since it needed major repair.
It looks so great in pictures but when i got it on the bench soon realized the top is a silver foil with lines etched in it to look like a 9.9 grade carved flame maple top! A candy apple red hot rod finish, that looks spectacular enough to fool your frends & dazzle audiences. The original pick-ups sound great, very bright and clean with that 30+ year old mellowing.
The original plastic parts are all well yellowed, but not from a smoker they are just old. I first thought this was, as guitar history books say, a later Silvertone from an early run in Japan from 1969 to '71 - yet found this type of serial number is from around 1991 in Indonesia (so the low price, a Japan custom shop one of these would be thousands)
The neck had a bad repair which I redid totally, using a special wooden boat epoxy and then a black epoxy to smooth it pout - took a LONG time to get it just right too. I replaced the rusty old tuners with a set I had for a long time (off a real classic Gibson), of early 'patent pending' GROVERS! One of the six is little later non-patent pending one and if this were a complete set of them it would be worth 200 bucks alone.
The truss rod was not working so I filled the slot with carbon bars, to make it FAR stronger than when new.
Now a big problem is the upper neck frets are not accurately spaced, a rhythm guitar with BIG powerchord sound -
NOT a bolt on neck and I had thought to put a whole new neck on, and complete necks can now be had for only 42 bucks! Yet it is just such a cool looking instrument as it is so I left it, so.
The bridge and stop tail piece were missing and I found old ones that match perfectly.

With the relatively lightweight body - total 8 3/4 pounds so not too light, this has an extra rich tone with a rock solid bass from the heavy tail piece - much like the 'real thing'. So if you need a flashy electric that looks like a 6 figure 1960 burst...
