Hackberry and serviceberry are two of North America's native fruit trees. Both are beautiful landscape trees that have fruits that are enjoyed by birds and human's alike. Though you won't find them in the grocery store both hackberries and serviceberries are good for fresh eating or baking. If you aren't inclined to harvest the fruit for yourself you can just leave it for the birds. the hackberry trees available are native seedlings so the variety if fruit and foliage is variable. The serviceberries are the selected cultivar Autumn Brilliance which has stunning fall foliage. Both are sold as whips (young trees without branches yet) so that you can select the height you want the branches by pruning 6-12" above the height where you want the bottom branches.
