Here is a rarely seen cross over technology item. It is a wonderful piece to show the end of one age and the beginning of a new one. It came from an elderly aunt who bought it new and never learned to use a PC but kept this until she passed away in 2018. This PWP 3850 is one of the last machines that Smith Corona built and is a cross between an early PC word processor and an electric typewriter. It was designed for the person who understood a typewriter but didn't want to learn all about the new PC's that were replacing them. So it has a big switch on the left side that puts it either in typewriter mode, or word processing mode. It also has a spreadsheet mode when in the word processor. The typewriter portion is actually a Daisy wheel printer and works just fine with a good ribbon yet as seen in the attached picture. It was actually printing the page seen in one picture and the ink is dark and readable. It can also produce word processing files that are MS-DOS compatible and spreadsheets that were Lotus 123 compatible on it's own internal floppy disk.

This is probably the -ONLY- electric typewriter that you will find with a 3.5 inch, double density, 720K floppy disk on the side of it! The monitor shows a February 1993 manufacturing date. The typewriter portion has the original advertising sticker on it yet for a store display and the original plastic keyboard cover to keep the dust out. I don't think you'll find another one this nice any time soon, and if you do you will likely pay almost as much in shipping as the asking price is here. When on display, it never fails to draw the attention of and comments from anyone from the typewriter or computer age. If you know an early computer collector, or a typewriter collector, they will likely -love- this piece.

What is especially interesting about this as a collectors item is that it was the last typewriter product produced by Smith Corona before they went into bankruptcy - so obviously not a big seller -. Since it had such limited use as a computer, and was too fancy for many electric typewriter enthusiasts, many of them were scrapped years ago and the remaining few are likely to only increase in value. As nice as it is, I've got too many old computers and things to display them all so it's time someone else enjoyed this instead of it just sitting in the back of a closet here. If vintage computers and electronics are your thing, take a look at our other postings as you might find other interesting things posted from time to time as I clear out some things I've collected since the 1980's when I worked for the first computer store in Michigan.

$125 takes this away. Or if you want this and something else we have posted as well, send us a note and an offer and we are happy to consider some type of bundle on just the items you want. We're usually pretty reasonable if the offer is fair and maybe we can work out a bundled deal. You can click on the "more ads by this user" link near the top right of this page to see everything we have listed.

We recently retired and are cleaning up things we've accumulated over the years so have many different items posted. We travel between Calumet MI and Cloquet MN along US 2 every other week so if you see something here you like and are in that direction, we could possibly meet you along the way on one of those trips.
